How can you dim light bulbs?

You have a lamp and want to make it dimmable. You can then use the dimmer. But which model is suitable for your lamp? There are different types of lamps and each one requires its own solution. The simplest lamp is the incandescent lamp connected directly to the mains. An incandescent lamp is easily recognized by the bulb containing a thin filament. An incandescent lamp is easy to dim. Every 230-volt version whose incandescent lamp power is between the minimum and maximum power is suitable for dimming your incandescent lamp. A halogen lamp is an incandescent lamp whose wire operates at a higher temperature. There are mains voltage halogen lamps and low voltage halogen lamps. For the mains voltage halogen, the same applies as the standard incandescent bulb. A low-voltage halogen lamp is connected to the mains via a classic wire-wound transformer or an electronic transformer. To dim a low-voltage halogen lamp, you need a type suitable for halogen lamps. This is connected in the 230-volt circuit between the transformer and the mains. If you have an electronic halogen transformer, it must be suitable for dimming. If it is not, order a new dimmable electronic halogen transformer as well.

Dimming LED bulbs

An LED lamp works on a completely different principle than an incandescent lamp. In an incandescent bulb, current flows through wire with an electrical resistance, causing it to get hot and light up brightly. An LED is a semiconductor diode in which electrons passing through the semiconductor transition directly produce photons. An LED lamp often consists of several LEDs and a built-in electronic circuit that regulates the current through the LEDs. There are two types of LED lamps. First, mains voltage LED lamps that can be connected directly to the mains and second, low voltage LED lamps such as LED strips that run on 12 volts and are connected to the mains through an LED transformer. The design of electronics in the LED lamp and electronic transformer determines whether or not an LED is dimmable. A dimmer symbol on an LED lamp and LED transformer indicates whether it is dimmable or not. If you want to be able to dim a low-voltage LED lamp, both the LED and the electronic transformer must be dimmable. When ordering the dimmer, pay attention to the power rating. The power of connected LEDs must be between the maximum and minimum dimmable LED power.

Cord dimmer

A cord dimmer is a model that you can easily install yourself in a cord of a screen lamp. If the cord already has a cord switch, this model replaces the switch. If the screen lamp has its own built-in switch, then this model can also be used. The switch must then be set to "on" for the dimmer to function. For assembly, you will need the following tools. A cutter, a stripper, a cable cutter and a screwdriver. Before getting started, unplug the power cord. If there is already a switch in the cord, you can remove it by opening it or cutting the cord close to the switch. Once you have cut it, peel open both ends of the cord with the knife without damaging the insulation. Then strip the wire ends with the stripper; half an inch is usually enough. Connect the cord with the lamp to the terminals with the lamp symbol. Connect the end of the cord with the plug to the two terminals with the voltage symbol. Built-in dimmer

With a built-in dimmer you replace a wall switch. Some experience with electrical installations is required for the installation. If you do not have that, leave the installation of the dimmer to the professional. If you want to install the dimmer yourself, switch off the mains voltage in the meter box before you start. If the lamp is operated with a single switch, the switch is connected with a brown and a black wire. Connect these two wires to the dimmer. If you have a model with three connections, connect one of the two wires to the connection marked 'P'. If the lamp is operated with two switches, you have what is called a hotel switch. You can replace one of the two switches with the dimmer. The other continues to function as normal to turn the light on and off. For this situation, use the dimmer with the "changeover switch" option. When disconnecting the switch you want to replace, pay close attention to the connections. One of the switch contacts is marked with a P and/or has a red marking. After disconnecting the switch, connect this wire to the dimmer's P contact.
