Kinds of capacitors

A capacitor is used to hold an electrical charge for an extended period of time and stabilize the supply voltage. Different types of materials are used for production. For example, there are tantalum and axial capacitors, as well as ceramic capacitors and aluminum-elco models. In Allekabels' assortment you will also find round capacitors in a fireproof housing, these have high moisture resistance and insulation. Ceramic types are mainly found in devices that receive or transmit high-frequency signals. An example of this are devices that use X-rays, these are mainly found in the medical sector. A tantalum capacitor has the characteristic of having a high capacitance with a low breakdown voltage. Because these components are also small in size, this type is very widely applicable. Bipolar models are also available in our assortment. With these models, it does not matter which side the + or - is connected, and therefore these models are ideally suited for a circuit with an alternating voltage. In most cases, the capacitor is marked in small "pb" on the capacitor and does not have a + and - on it. Don't forget to look at our sets. These sets contain different capacitors. In our assortment is a ceramic set with as many as 224 pieces and also we have a set radial models with 120 pieces.

Capacity of a capacitor

When looking for the right type of capacitor, the first thing usually looked for is capacitance of the part. The ability of a specific type to store charge, the number of coulombs per volt, is called the capacitance. The capacitance of these components is generally clearly indicated by the unit farad. This is relatively large, in practice it is expressed in picofarad (pF), nanofarad (nF) or microfarad (µF) becomes. Simultaneously, the maximum capacitance of capacitors is increasing. Allekabels offers types with capacitance as low as 0.6 µF.

Sizes, voltage, connection and tolerance

With a capacitor, it is important for the component to fit on a circuit. After all, there is often limited space available on a circuit board as equipment gets smaller and smaller. It is also common that because it is a component replacement, a very specific size must be used. Therefore, on every single product page of a capacitor type, Allekabels always indicates the dimensions of this component in length and circumference. In addition to capacitance and dimensions, the product pages of our capacitors also list other details. You will find information about the voltage for which the component is suitable, the type of connection and the tolerance within which the values move. Allekabels sells only quality components that move within the standard tolerance limits. You will also see the number of components in stock. For example, if you need 100 pieces of a type with a capacity of 50 µF, you can immediately see if you can have it in stock tomorrow.

Type of application matters

For most types of capacitors, you can find online what application or purposes they are suitable for. For example, whether they are suitable for installation in a motor. Or whether the tolerance meets specific requirements of a device. Not sure which type to use for your application? Perhaps you need other advice when purchasing your component? If so, please contact our customer service department.
